Move SharePoint to New Server

I’m trying to use the SharePoint Content Deployment Wizard to move our WSS sites to a new server.  I installed WSS on the new server and put it in a new farm.  I then used the SharePoint Content Deployment Wizard to export one of the old sites.  When I tried to do an import on the new server I would get a “unable to contact site at address http://site1.sampledomain.com”.  I’m trying to use the same url as was used on the old server.  What am I doing wrong?  Can I use the SharePoint Content Deployment Wizard to move from an old server to a new server?  Is there a document that explains the exact steps to accomplish this?  Is there an easier way to move the sites to a new server without using the SharePoint Content Deployment Wizard?

Thanks

If you are running SharePoint on Windows 2003 SP1 or later (IIS 5.1 or later), a security feature may block access to SharePoint from the local machine using a FQDN. See KB896861 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896861)
